Numerical analysis becomes a powerful resource in the study of partial differential equations (PDEs), allowing to illustrate existing theorems and find conjectures. By using sophisticated methods, questions which seem inaccessible before, like rapid oscillations or blow-up of solutions can be addressed in an approached way. Rapid oscillations in solutions are observed in dispersive PDEs without dissipation where solutions of the corresponding PDEs without dispersion present shocks. International audience; This article discusses the analysis of trade and circulation in the writings of seventeenth-century political arithmeticians. Political arithmetic was in its way an anatomy of the social body. William Petty titled his 1672 book The Political Anatomy of Ireland. In his preface he explicitly claimed to be following Francis Bacon, highlighting the experimental method and the idea that analytical methods can be transposed from one discipline to another. Fay's identity on Riemann surfaces is a powerful tool in the context of algebro-geometric solutions to integrable equations. This relation generalizes a well-known identity for the cross-ratio function in the complex plane. It allows to establish relations between theta functions and their derivatives. This offers a complementary approach to algebro-geometric solutions of integrable equations with certain advantages with respect to the use of Baker-Akhiezer functions. It has been successfully applied by Mumford et al. to the Korteweg-de Vries, Kadomtsev-Petviashvili and sine-Gordon equations. Inverse scattering is the most powerful tool in theory of integrable systems. Starting in the late sixties resounding great progress was made in (1+1) dimensional problems with many break-through results as on soliton interactions. Naturally the attention in recent years turns towards higher dimensional problems as the Davey-Stewartson equations, an integrable generalisation of the (1+1)-dimensionalcubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Herbert J. Davenport on Conspicuous Consumption and the Economics of Feminism

This article analyzes Herbert J. Davenport’s discussions of conspicuous consumption and feminism. Even though these (typically) Veblenian topics represent two “episodes” in many respects disconnected with the central body of Davenport’s theoretical interests, the assessment of Davenport’s views on these matters enlarges our knowledge of the development of his thought. Our analysis shows how Davenport can be enrolled among the forerunners of the modern theory of positional goods. Moreover, our article offers some new findings on the impact of Veblen’s ideas on one of his closest students at the Chicago University.

Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani toistuvia ruutuja Alan Mooren, Dave Gibbonsin ja John Higginsin sarjakuvaromaanissa Watchmen (1986–87). Teokseen sisältyy useita kymmeniä sarjakuvaruutuja, jotka esitetään sarjakuvan mittaan useammin kuin yhden kerran – useimmin toistetut jopa neljästi tai viidesti. Saman ruudun toistuminen on mielenkiintoinen sarjakuvakerronnan keino, jota ei sellaisenaan esiinny muissa mediumeissa. Lähestyn toistuvia ruutuja sarjakuvakerronnan tutkimuksen eli sarjakuvanarratologian näkökulmasta.
